I decided to leave an hour later so I’d reach the motel around 15h00, when check‑in begins. I timed it pretty well, since I arrived fifteen minutes before the scheduled time.
The weather was brilliant today, and I took the opportunity to stop at Henderson’s in Lancaster to buy a fresh sandwich, a bean salad, and a raspberry yogurt. I waited until I got to Québec to find a picnic table to eat at. That was a mistake, because I started to run low on energy. My strength came back later, after the meal.
The route has no big climbs and is fairly easy. However, unsurprisingly, the road conditions are terrible once you reach Québec. The Soulanges Canal path, which could be a fantastic cycling route, isn’t. Most of it is poorly maintained, and you spend your time bouncing around on your backside. This is the section that welcomes visitors to the province. Frankly, if they can’t properly welcome visitors right at the start, I dread what the road surface must be like farther along.
Tomorrow’s forecast keeps changing by the hour. Sometimes it calls for rain overnight and clear skies for the rest of the day. Now, twelve hours before the last stage of the trip, the weather is the opposite, it’ll be dry… right up until the moment I have to hit the road. I still have a glimmer of hope that the forecast will be wrong and that I won’t get caught in the rain.
Otherwise, I brought a rain jacket, rain pants, and sandals precisely for this kind of situation.
